Prepare a Mac Photos Library on an External SSD
Reviewed 29 October 2026 · PhotoSSD support
Start with a complete, locally available Mac Photos library on a suitable SSD. Preparing the library before connecting it to your iPhone or iPad avoids confusing a missing original with an app connection problem.
Identify the library you want to use
In Finder on your Mac, locate the package ending in .photoslibrary. The default library is usually in your Pictures folder, but your library may already be on an external drive. If you have several libraries, check the one you intend to browse in Photos on Mac before copying it.
Keep a separate backup before making changes to your storage setup. This page does not ask you to delete the source library or erase a drive.
Use Apple’s library storage guidance
Apple specifies APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for a drive used to store a Photos library on Mac, and excludes a drive used for Time Machine backups. Quit Photos before transferring the library package. For the full process and storage restrictions, follow Apple’s guide to moving a Photos library.
A drive format that iPhone can read as ordinary storage is not automatically a suitable format for an active Mac Photos library. Follow the Mac library guidance as well as the connection requirements of your iPhone or iPad.
Check that the originals are local
If iCloud Photos is enabled with optimised Mac storage, some originals may still need downloading. Apple’s download guide explains the “Download Originals to this Mac” setting. Allow downloads to finish while the Mac is connected before expecting those originals to be available from an offline SSD.
Do not assume that cloud-only originals will be available from the SSD. Keeping an original in iCloud is different from having that original available on the connected drive.
Check the copy before switching devices
- Confirm that the transfer has finished and the library package is present.
- Check the intended library in Photos on Mac while keeping your backup.
- Quit Photos, then safely eject the drive from the Mac.
- Connect the SSD to your iPhone or iPad and check it in Files.
- Select the library in PhotoSSD and try a few photos from different dates.
Know the compatibility limits
PhotoSSD’s App Store listing describes viewing Mac Photos libraries from compatible external SSDs. It does not provide a universal guarantee for every library version, filesystem, adapter or SSD. If the library is visible but cannot open, contact support before changing or repairing the original.
PhotoSSD is a viewer. Keep your backup routine separate from the drive you carry with you.
