Open a Mac Photos Library on iPhone or iPad from an SSD

Reviewed 29 October 2026 · PhotoSSD support

Yes: PhotoSSD is designed to open an Apple Photos library (.photoslibrary) created on a Mac from a compatible external SSD on iPhone or iPad. Connect the drive, select the library in PhotoSSD, and browse.

This guide is for a library you already keep on an SSD. It helps you choose between viewing the library directly, importing individual photos, and using cloud synchronisation.

Check what is on your drive

A Mac Photos library is a package with a name ending in .photoslibrary. It contains the structure used by the Photos app on Mac. A folder of exported JPEG or HEIC files is a different starting point. Check the filename in Finder on your Mac before choosing an app for the job.

PhotoSSD’s published workflow is for the Mac library package. Do not rename a normal folder to .photoslibrary or assume that a general file browser will interpret a Photos library.

What you need

Open the library

  1. Connect the SSD to your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Files, choose Browse, and check that the drive appears under Locations.
  3. Open PhotoSSD and use the library selection control.
  4. Select the .photoslibrary on the external SSD.
  5. Browse the thumbnail grid, explore by year and month, or open a photo at full size.

If the drive does not appear in Files, resolve the connection first. If the drive appears but the library will not open, contact support with the library’s macOS version and the device details. We do not publish a tested matrix for every SSD or macOS library version.

PhotoSSD does not require a cloud upload or account registration to browse. It does not promise the synchronisation behaviour of iCloud Photos. Browsing from a drive also does not create another backup.
